Metro Sul do Tejo (MTS) is a surface light railway, for which the 30-year contract was awarded to the MTS - Metro Transportes do Sul Consortium led by the Barraqueiro Group and which includes Teixeira Duarte, SA, Mota - Engil, SGPS, Sopol, SA, Siemens, SA, Siemens, AG and MECI, SA., following an international Call for Tenders for the Design, Construction, Equipment and Rolling Stock Suppy, Operating, Maintenance and Conservation for the entire Metro Sul do Tejo network.

This contract came into force on 12 December 2002 and runs until 2032. It covers the 5 years it took to build the network, supply the equipment and rolling stock, as well as the remaining 25 years of commercial operation.

During this first phase, the MTS network consists of 3 lines, serving the Almada and Seixal municipalities:

• Line 1: Corroios - Cacilhas
• Line 2: Corroios - Pragal
• Line 3: Cacilhas - University
